Hazel and the Humming Window

Hazel investigates a mysterious hum and finds bees working beyond the window.

The kitchen window began humming just after breakfast. Hazel placed both front paws on the sill and tilted her head left, then right, trying to decide whether the glass had learned a song.

Outside, bees moved through the lavender in tidy loops. Their wings made the low, busy music, rising whenever the sun reached the flowers and fading whenever a cloud crossed the garden.

Hazel watched until her own tail began to keep time. On later mornings she returned to the sill, not to catch the bees, but to listen to the small orchestra tune itself for the day.
